AAPL Membership Levels

The American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law is the premier forensic psychiatric organization in the world, dedicated to the highest standards of practice at the interface of psychiatry and the law. The American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL, pronounced “apple”) is an organization of psychiatrists dedicated to excellence in practice, teaching, and research in forensic psychiatry. Founded in 1969, AAPL currently has over 2,000 members in North America and around the world.

Eligibility

Only members of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, or comparable psychiatric associations in countries other than the United States will be eligible for membership in the Academy. The word, “members,” as used in this paragraph, will include any category of physician membership in that association.

Regular

Board certified psychiatrists that have been practicing in the US, Canada, or the Caribbean for at least 6 years and meet the Eligibility requirements above. Full voting rights.

Early Career-Years 1-3

Board certified psychiatrists that have been practicing for 1 to 3 years in the US, Canada, or the Caribbean and meet the Eligibility requirements above. Full voting rights.

Early Career-Years 4-6

Board certified psychiatrists that have been practicing for 4 to 6 years in the US, Canada, or the Caribbean and meet the Eligibility requirements above. Full voting rights.

Fellow

Persons who are enrolled at least half time in an appropriately accredited post-doctoral training program and who are concurrently members of one of the professional organizations listed above under Eligibility. No voting rights.

Resident

Persons who are enrolled at least half time in an appropriately accredited post-doctoral training program and who are concurrently members of one of the professional organizations listed above under Eligibility. No voting rights.

Medical Student

Medical students are persons enrolled fulltime in an appropriately accredited medical school and who are concurrently members of one of the professional organizations listed above under Eligibility. No voting rights.

Corresponding

Corresponding members are persons otherwise eligible for general membership whose principal address is outside the United States, Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean. No voting rights.

Life Members

Life Members are members who have been general members for at least 15 years and have reached the age of 70.

Inactive Members

Inactive members are persons who have fully retired and have been general members for fewer than 15 years or have not reached the age of 70. No voting rights.
